Your photography is wonderful; I visit your blog frequently via Urban Yukon. When I was a child, my siblings and I would beg Mom and Dad to take us to Marsh Lake where the black gophers were prevalent. The black gophers began to become scarce there during the ’60’s and it’s been some time now since I’ve seen any while driving through the area. It may be that the gophers have moved further into the wilderness to avoid the people and pets who now live there. This image is wonderful and brought back fond memories of Sunday drives with my parents and siblings.

We were at Jakes’ Corner yesterday and they say there are 9 or 10 of them around there. We had never seen black gophers. I got a couple of pictures, for proof.
